Based in Surrey, LAST is run by a group of surgeons, surgical trainees, together with the CEO of The AMECA Trust. Charitable governance is provided by AMECA.
LAST COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Paul Thomas is a Consultant General Surgeon at Epsom & St Helier University Hospital NHS Trust in South West London. He co-founded LAST with Caris Grimes, a higher surgical trainee in 2011. He is Clinical Director of AMECA and LAST. He trained at Bart’s in London and completed higher surgical training in South West Thames with overseas experience in South Africa and France.
Peter Willson is a Consultant Surgeon from Kingston, who has been a surgical educator for over 30 years in the UK and abroad.Within the UK he is Surgical Tutor at Kingston Hospital and has been involved in teaching Medical Students, Physicians Assistants and Post Graduate Surgeons in Training locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. He joined the Board of Last in 2014.
Tom Loosemore is a vascular surgeon at St Georges, London and East Surrey Hospitals. Formerly a Surgical Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons he is actively involved with post-graduate surgical training in the UK and overseas.

Jessica Mok is s a higher surgical trainee, who trained at Nottingham Medical School. She is currently working in the London Deanery; Jessica has participated in a surgical training visit to Malawi in May 2014, teaching and training at Nsanje District Hospital. Jessica’s role within LAST is to disseminate information to surgical trainees and help with fundraising.
Ruthie Markus is the CEO and founder of The AMECA Trust. AMECA provides charitable governance for LAST; Ruthie and Paul sit on AMECA’s Board of Directors. and are both fully involved with LAST’s and AMECA’s joint initiatives in Malawi. Ruthie also provides administrative support to LAST and facilitates surgical training visits to Malawi through on the ground support and liaison with host hospitals.

Caris Grimes has now completed her higher surgical training and is working as a Fellow in Colo-rectal surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. She spent her childhood in sub-saharan Africa and is committed to Surgical Training in under-resourced countries. She is co-author of the Lancet Commission document on Global need.
