Surgical Training Link
LAST was set up to support training of Clinical Officers in District Hospitals. The shortage of qualified surgeons in Malawi means that not only are there insufficient surgeons to perform operations but also a lack of faculty to train Clinical Officers who deliver the majority of surgical procedures in the country. Enhancing surgical skills at district level will reduce the need to refer to the already overwhelmed tertiary hospitals and furthermore improve selection and triage of patients.

LAST works with the Department of Surgery at Queens, Blantyre to co-ordinate this training. We use a combination of theoretical training in the classroom, clinical skills training on the wards and operative training in theatres supervising the Clinical Officers during procedures.
