LAST Surgery

LAST was set up as a resource to encourage and facilitate surgical training visits to Malawi. Time and experience has resulted in an expansion in both our activities and our links to organisations who share our vision and our objectives.

LAST aims to support surgical training and develop┬ásurgical skills for healthcare workers in Malawi, focusing on rural district and mission hospitals, where this need is particularly pressing. LAST also provides much-needed medical and surgical resources for these hospitals. Information about these hospitals can be viewed here…………

Through low cost and sustainable initiatives, LAST aims to deliver the following objectives to:

  • Encourage UK surgeons to participate in surgical training visits to district hospitals in Malawi;
  • Provide and coordinate on the ground support for visiting personnel;
  • Provide a bibliography of published material on teaching and training of clinical officers;
  • Raise funds in order to support training visits, when required;
  • Expand the range of surgical specialties offered at district hospitals;
  • Enhance the skills and confidence of Clinical Officers, surgeons and other healthcare professionals in district hospitals;
  • Provide a resource for surgical and medical professionals wishing to offer training in Malawi;
  • Address the paucity in medical and surgical equipment in rural district hospitals;
  • Liaise with other organisations both nationally and internationally to avoid duplication of resources and wastage of funds.
